The Gnu-HALO Project

Welcome!

The Gnu-HALO Project is an experimental Linux distribution that takes some new and some old-but-rarely-used ideas regarding Operating System Layout, User Interface Design and System Security and puts them all together in one package. The Live-CD is built off of SLAX Linux using Unification File System (Unionfs) and squashFS based Linux Live modules. With the intent of being more of an Operating System than another Linux distro, Gnu-HALO will include standardized core libraries and base the desktop environment on KDE for broadest support.

Why do this?

What if you could have a fast and modern operating system that could run on nearly any hardware no matter how old or new, had an easy to learn and use interface that customized itself based on your native language, allowed you to log into your desktop from any other compatable computer and leave nothing behind on the host system but whatever network traffic you used and chose to leave behind, gave you a memory card with all of your files that could be placed into any compatable electronics device and instantly have it customized to your needs, made data backup and recovery so easy a child could do it, is completely resistant to viruses and malware, and is completely free to use. It's a nice dream, isn't it? Well, there's no excuse for that dream to not be our reality. There are already several OSS projects available to the public today that if brought together can help make this happen. The primary goal of The Gnu-HALO Project is to bring these technologies together with some of our own ideas to prove that this dream can happen here and now. For more information on how we intend to do this, check out the Project Goals .

Support Gnu-HALO

Do you really like what's trying to be accomplished? Do you want to help, but don't know how to code? Have no fear, because you can still help us! You can go download the latest version to show others, place a link to http://halo.willisburg.org on your website, or just spread the word about the project to others. Simply put, the best way to help us is to get the word out. The more support we have, the easier it will be to move towards showing what OSS software can really do on the desktop, and what a real operating system should do.

Blame it on Rio!

It's November. It's the middle of November. Technically it's a bit past the middle of November. Everyone directly involved with the project is doing well for the most part, but we hit some delays. South American politics helped factor into the delay, as has some health scares in my own house (for once, not myself... shocking, I know!), and a mishap with a fair chunk of work done on the project and website that was stored on a ReiserFS partition. Let me just say that the recovery tools for ReiserFS works really well on files that ReiserFS mutilates voluntarily. Whoops... didn't notice that tag was open, let me fix that. </sarcasm>

Alwin is about done with the first revision of the daemon that'll make Gnu-HALO so flippin' sweet. I'm also working on trying to get most of the work I lost caught back up again as well as time permits. Hang in there faithful few, it's still coming sooner than later... I promise.

Prepping for October

Howdy everybody! Willis here with a short update on the status of the planned Alpha 0.02 release.

As the Alpha 0.02 release is going to be setting the groundwork for the future of Gnu-HALO, we're taking cautious steps to ensure that the base is well structured. The biggest change to expect from us from the pre-Alpha release to this next release is a migration in core platforms as we're migrating away from the Slackware base from SLAX to a currently unnamed Debian based platform. *cough-kubuntu-cough* Wink

We will be replacing the standard bundled kernel with an L4Linux based microkernel and recompiling the base system for optimum performance, but this is not news. We've also finally settled on an overall look and feel and base color schemes for KDE, and as the first official non-proof-of-concept release it is going to look sharp, but this is not really news either...
